Baking Soda: My (new) Favorite Cleaning Solution

Over the weekend I fell in love… with Baking Soda. I don’t really like using chemicals or “over-sanitizing”. I believe that if you don’t expose yourself or your children to germs then you don’t build antibodies and you and you kid are constantly getting sick. Also with a crawling, putting everything in their mouth baby I get nervous with what I’m exposing him to, so I try to steer clear of chemical cleaners.  I also have a naughty doggy that likes to sneak into the bathroom.. instead of telling me he needs to go outside( he’s got the right idea but its a little flawed since he can’t sit on the toilet) No matter how many times I have cleaned up the pee I couldn’t get rid of the the smell and it infuriated me. I ‘m big on smells and like my house to smell fresh, not like a dog kennel.

I saw a post on pinterest about how to get rid of the Boy bathroom smell… and I was intrigued. The post I read instructed me to make a paste with baking soda and lemon..let sit and then hit it with distilled white vinegar from a spray bottle. This worked well however I needed a large scale clean. So I found another post that described a mixture of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and dish soap and putting it into a spray bottle. I tried it but the spray bottle kept getting clogged. I ended up just unscrewing the top and pouring it all over the floor. I grabbed my spray bottle of vinegar and thought lets put two and two together. I got on my hands and knees and sprayed then scrubbed ( I should probably mention I have all tile floors.) I focused on the grout lines. Once I scrubbed the floor I got out my mop and bucket and used water with a little bit of vinegar to finish the job, THE SMELL IS GONE!! THE SMELL IS GONE!! and the crowd goes wild! (envision me running around my house with hands in the air chanting)

Once I saw how well the baking soda worked for the floors, I hit pinterest in search of all the many things I could do with Baking soda. I found out I could use it to clean my electric stove top . I had ran out of stuff that came with the oven when I first bought it and hadn’t cleaned it in a while because I thought I could only use that stuff. When I saw I could use baking soda I couldn’t wait to see if it really worked. Oh, It worked. and it was so easy. Just sprinkle the stove top with baking soda, wet a rag with hot water ring it out (soggy not soppy) and place on top and let sit for 15 mins. Mine was really grimy so I did two rounds.  I’ll never go back.

I also used baking soda and vinegar to recharge my towels. It was as simple as running the laundry once with vinegar in the fabric softener cup and then running it again with half a cup of baking soda placed in the drum. Good as new. I think from now on I’m just gonna put a scoop in every time I do laundry.

I also read a post on a baking soda underarm scrub that’s deodorizing and can whiten the skin too. aaaaaand guess what you mix it with… Coconut Oil! my fav! I’m thinking I’ll just remake my scrub but add some baking soda to it.

I’m pretty sure what needs to happen is I have a jar or coconut oil and baking soda in every room.

I’ll put my “recipes” and instructions below even though they are not set in stone… . I wish I took pictures. Oh well, lesson learned… next time.

Urine Smell remover:

10 oz. of Hydrogen Peroxide

3 tablespoons of Baking Soda

a spray bottle of white distilled Vinegar

A few drops of dish soap

  1. saturate floor with mixture
  2. take spray bottle of vinegar and spray floor and scrub as you go. spray then scrub.
  3. mop with water/vinegar solution ( 1 part vinegar, 9 parts water)

Let air dry.

Electric stove top cleaner:

  1. Sprinkle baking soda on affected area.
  2. take clean rag and soak in hot water- lay out flat on stove top
  3. wait 15 minutes
  4. use wet rag to scrub and clean off baking soda
  5. repeat if needed
  6. rinse rag off and wipe down with clean rag until  streaking is gone.

Recharge Towels:

  1. Run the laundry with vinegar only, run the hot water. (I put my in the fabric softener cup, but I also read you can add it directly to the drum)
  2. Run it again this time with only 1/2 cup of baking soda in the drum.

So there it is. That’s what I did Saturday night. I’m so cool these days. I’ll always have a vat of baking soda on hand for any of my cleaning necessities and I’m happy to throw away all my different kinds of cleaning products for one simple easy solution. From now on my cleaning supplies will consist of : Baking soda, Vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide.

Thanks for reading. Please feel free to leave me a comment on how useful baking soda (or any natural cleaning product for that matter) is to you. I’m always looking for new ways to do things.

Thanks again! XOXOXO

What I did while Westie was gone…

Westie has spent the last two weeks at Grammy and Grampy’s (We call it G&G summer camp). This was the longest I have gone without my baby since the day he was born. My parents live about 6 hours away 😦 I started crying the night before I had to leave him. Watched him sleep like I was leaving him forever, I felt like it was going be forever. I cried in the shower. I choked back tears the whole morning.

Even though I would miss my baby terribly I was looking forward to having the time off to get some things done without distractions.

I wrote out my list:

Fix broken lights

-Bathroom

-Hallway

-Front door light

Go through Westie’s clothes

Lower Westie’s Crib ( I can’t believe how fast he grows!)

Organize and Clean

-Kitchen

-Bathrooms

-Storage Closet

Deep Clean Floors

Cut Chewy (my annoyingly charming Shih-Tzu with the personality of an old man and a baby all at the same time)

Make beauty products out of Coconut Oil (my new favorite obsession)

-Body Scrub/Shave Gel

-Make-up remover

Make self-watering herb planters

I felt like 2 weeks would be an ETERNITY!

It was a blink of an eye and I don’t think I completed half of the things I wanted to do.

Here is what I did:

Mon-Thurs: Work-> laid around with chewy til I was ready to go to bed(around 10)

                     Mon: Made Coconut products

                     Wed:Cut chewy

Fri: Work-> Transformers in 3D (Loved it!) ->walmart for some late night shopping -> hung out with my friend and his buddies till 7 am.

Sat: slept from 9am-4 pm-> Sushi and a comedy show (fucking hilarious)-> home by 10->passed out

Sunday: Woke up at 6 am (The one and only day I could have slept in these 2 weeks, Figures….) tried to go back to sleep til 4 pm —> food shopped->  Attempted to fix my lights in the bathroom-Got hot and sweaty balancing on the counter trying to install tube lighting (the bane of my existence- I will never own a tube lighting fixture again!) Is it turned right? Maybe one is but not the other..why won’t it turn on! I have tried every type of combination..UGH!..to get to the point they are still not fixed.

Mon: Work -> Laid around with chewy-> Bed

Tues: Work->Dishes(please note I DID NOT do the dishes for nearly two weeks…eek, I’m gross- but they were rinsed cleaned :/)->Started my blog- bed at 11

Wed: Work-> Had a friend over for dinner->sort Westie’s clothes for what doesn’t fit him (which is everything!) -> lowered Westie’s crib->worked on blog

SO JUST AS A RECAP THIS IS WHAT I ACCOMPLISHED AND WHAT I DID NOT

Fix broken lights-tried and failed!

-Bathroom

-Hallway

-Front door light

Go through Westie’s clothes

Lower Westie’s Crib

Organize and Clean

-Kitchen

-Bathrooms

-Storage Closet

Deep Clean Floors

Cut Chewy

Make beauty products out of Coconut Oil

-Body Scrub/Shave Gel

-Make-up remover

Make self-watering herb planters

I started this post with intentions to show that I didn’t get anything done this week when I had such high hopes to complete things. But when I actually sat down and crossed off the list. I did a pretty good job.. even if most of it was done in the final 2 days 😉

I still need to organize this place, fix the lighting (its a dungeon in here), and make my herbs- which I think all those projects are pretty big projects. I’ll let you know how the Self- Watering herbs go. I saw it on pinterest and I plan on posting about it. Stay tuned for more…..
